Ransomware in numbers

The total cost of data recovery from ransomware attacks has increased from over 12 million US dollars in 2015 to 850 million in 2016, and 5,000 million in 2017

What does this tell us?

The cost of these attacks is increasing, and all forecasts indicate an increase in the number of attacks, as well as in the range of devices susceptible to them (for example, IoT). Ransomware will undoubtedly be the main security threat that all businesses will face in the upcoming years.

Total damages caused by ransomware were estimated to be 0.325 billion dollars in 2015, 1 billion in 2016, 5 billion in 2017 and 11.5 billion in 2019.

What does this tell us?

Costs associated with an attack are not just related to possible data recovery. Among other important consequences we find: business paralysis, irretrievable loss of data (often sensitive data), failure to comply with data protection laws, loss of reputation and brand image… if antiransomware solutions like Mitra Antiransomware are not installed, infections will continue to increase, and with them, the total amount of damage.

Most attacks continue to take place in end-user devices (computers, laptops, printers, servers, mobiles, USBs…): these decreased from 100% in 2012 to 80% in 2017

What does this mean?

Endpoint protection is not effective: statistics on endpoint infections have shown little change in recent years, despite the emergence of numerous antiransomware solutions based on device protection. What we need is a change of focus, and Mitra Antiransomware offers this solution based on data protection rather than endpoint protection.

Financial gain is the main motive for ransomware attacks, and this hasn’t changed since 2012

What does this mean?

The motives behind these attacks are purely financial. Hackers do not care the type or size of the business they attack, and it is a fundamental mistake to think that small businesses are not targets for an attack. The only thing hackers care about is that the information they damage is important to you, so that the infection can afflict the company and you are forced into paying a ransom.
